Nikon D3 SLR Digital Camera user reviews

"I Believe tha D3 is the best camera ever made by Nikon! "

"Is the Nikon D3 the best digital SLR Nikon have ever made? Oh yes... By a country mile. But is it better than the 1DS Mk III? You'll have to wait until we test one of those. To my eye it easily beats anything else for image quality and noise but there's the thorny question of the D300 - Nikon may have made that a bit too good. Either way £3,200 is a lot more than a D300 and a lot less than a 1DS Mk III.

"In the rights hands, the Nikon D3 performs exceptionally. The colors and the dynamic range are simply superb. The D3 is a professional tool for the professional photographer who also posses a certain level of technical prowess to get the most out of this camera system. Blogs are already filled with self-proclaimed experts making such assertions as the Nikon D3 lags behind the Sony?s 24 mega-pixel A900. I can tell you without reservation, that?s simply not true. I tried the A900 and in my opinion, the D3 is a far superior camera in virtually every respect. The Sony will perform admirably if the shooting conditions are ideal however, in challenging lighting situations, the A900 simply cannot produce the level of image quality from the D3. 100% crops from the Sony are just OK. Sony should have concentrated on developing a high quality 12 to 16 mega-pixel FF DSLR instead of a mediocre 24 mega-pixel. Nikon knew what they where doing when they developed the 12 mega-pixel FF D3. There is a considerable amount of latitude when dealing with the D3?s raw image files. If you require large print-outs (within limits of course) the D3?s capabilities is nearly boundless where other systems are very much limited. I hope that Nikon?s variant of the 24 mega-pixel DSLR will be properly designed considering the limitations of cramming all of those pixels even on a 35mm sensor. You folks out here who have a true passion for photography, pro or not pro, don?t get caught up with the mega-pixel horsepower race. The Nikon D3 or the D700 for that matter, will not place any limitations on your creative abilities as a photographer unless your printing requirements exceeds billboard sized prints. "

"I set down a D1X and popped the lens on the D3. Big mistake. That might as well have been a funeral ceremony for the D1X. The unfair comparison aside, this camera left me wondering how I was ever going to use all it had to offer. The first thing I noticed was that after a quick review of the control layout and on-screen menu choices, entering all of the custom settings I wanted was simple. Most of the "New Features" have on-screen info available at the touch of one clearly marked button. Shooting was as expected for a Pro 35mm format camera. Solid feel, instant response, and no surprises in the mechanics. Let's assume for the remainder of this review that it's well built and has all the features you could hope for in the format. The selling features for me are in the RESULTS. At high ISO settings, the D3 is superb. Low light with no strobe takes on an entirely new meaning. Combined with a VR lens, many once impossible shots seem easy. Images taken "On the fly" look as if they were set up carefully. 14 bit RAW files get a bit thick on the CF card, but hey - that's what the second slot is for! I'm using the D3 for interior architectural photos, and it has yet to let me down. As 30-year Nikon user, I have come to expect nothing but the best. Past digital offerings from Nikon have failed to live up to the standards set by the film cameras... until now. The D3 is simply the finest 35mm format SLR I have ever used.
