"My children are getting more active, and I was tired of "missing shots" with my pocket Nikon Coolpix when they are in action at T-ball, in the pool, on the ski slopes, etc. So I decided to buy a Nikon P80. Don't get me wrong - I would love to have a high-end SLR. But - I also need something that is smaller and lightweight so that I will actually use it. Not to mention, I would not carry a full-size SLR on the ski slopes. So I settled on the Nikon P80 and I would have to say that the optical zoom was the deciding factor.

I just took a 4-hour digital photography class in Yosemite Valley. The camera was working great, but then I noticed that my battery was being drained. To conserve battery power, I turned off the LCD display and used the view-finder instead. As a result, I was able to take many more photos. In the class we learned how to check the "histogram" for over-exposure. The P80 has this function in the playback mode. So you take a photo, go to playback to check the histogram, and then, if needed, you can modify the exposure and shoot again. "

"Manual Flash, hard to remember to open the flash. After a while it will become habit. Nikon COOLPIX P80's auto setting doesnt take the best of pictures."

"Nikon COOLPIX P80 is amazing for all it has to offer. For the beginner, this may not be the camera to start with, unless the user has a lot of time to "study" all the possible functions. For those who have a good, basic understanding of a camera( shutter speeds,focal lengths,iso`s, apetures etc.) this thing is a gem. The only cameras(small format) better than Nikons are Leicas...which cost thousands more. Photography has been more than a hobby to me over the past 32 years. I`m used to carrying several lenses,a few dozen batteries for flash,motor drive and camera itself. The P-80 is an excellent "all around" alternative. (New P-90, has max. focal length around 625mm !!!..) If you take good care of this camera, and become familiar with all it has to offer, It will provide you with years of enjoyment. Have fun. And one other thing..... It produces great pics!"

"I bought this to replace a 4MP Sharp camera which was good, but slow for the age(6yrs old) and a 4 AA battery hog. P80 shoots better pictures than that. I have been in Auto mode only. I find I do not have to retry like with old camera, shots are consistently good. Outdoor and Indoor shots are good. I do not use the Zoom much. I like the wide angle rather than pin hole cameras. Macro mode is excellent. Noise is lower than in my old camera. My test, in bright light see the inside of lense cover. I doubt the ISO6400 claim, but still much better than my old camera. I like the battery life and SD card speed and shot speed and startup/shutdown speed. Color with flash is better than my old camera. Much better point and shoot and macro and low noise than most 100$ to 250$ camera's at best buy and walmart where I tested quick shots before purchase. The sports mode is excellent, especially to get kids do something and capture it. Was this worth $339. I paid that much for my old camera years ago. i think I do not like the $100 to $250 cameras out there. May be there is something in the $250 to $330 (P80 price) range that is better, but I am tired to search and dont understand experts review.
